Morning in Port Aransas: Building Decks That Outlast the Coast ๐
There’s nothing quite like a Gulf Coast morning, salt air, open water, and a view worth protecting. But coastal living comes with real challenges, and your deck takes the brunt of them. Salt air, relentless humidity, and storm season have a way of exposing shortcuts in construction, often leading to warped boards, unstable footings, and costly repairs long before they should be necessary.
That’s exactly why a Port Aransas homeowner called G&H Construction.
๐น Check out the video to see this project before the transformation, a narrow second-floor deck with a small rear extension that was overdue for a serious upgrade.
Planning the Perfect Deck Extension ๐ ๏ธ
Every successful deck project starts well before the first board goes down. At G&H Construction, we begin with a thorough inspection of the connection point between the existing structure and the planned extension. On the coast, this step isn’t optional, one weak link can quietly compromise an entire deck over time.
For this project, the existing deck was narrow with a modest rear extension that wasn’t making the most of the home’s incredible views. Our plan was straightforward but required careful engineering: extend three feet outward in one direction and six feet in the other, creating a genuinely spacious second-floor deck. To avoid disrupting the yard and landscaping below, we cantilevered the extension directly into the home’s structure, no ground columns required. We also notched a corner of the deck to preserve an existing palm tree, keeping the natural character of the property intact.
Choosing the Right Materials for Coastal Durability ๐ด
Not all decking materials are created equal, and on the Gulf Coast, the wrong choice will show its weaknesses quickly. Salt air and persistent moisture accelerate rot, warping, and fading in traditional wood, which is why G&H Construction specified Trex composite decking for this project.
Trex is engineered to resist moisture, UV exposure, and termite damage without the ongoing maintenance that wood demands. It won’t splinter, rot, or require annual sealing, making it one of the most practical investments a coastal homeowner can make. All existing deck boards were replaced as part of this project, giving the homeowners a clean, cohesive finish built to handle whatever the Gulf throws at it.
Behind the Scenes: Craftsmanship That Goes Deeper Than the Surface ๐ทโโ๏ธ
Expanding a deck isn’t simply a matter of adding square footage. Structural integration, precise cantilevering, and thoughtful attention to the home’s existing features all require experience and care, the kind G&H Construction brings to every project.
Cantilevering the extension into the home’s framing eliminates the need for ground-level support columns while maintaining the structural integrity needed for long-term safety. Carefully notching around the palm tree required additional planning but preserved one of the property’s best natural features. And replacing every deck board ensured a uniform, polished result rather than a mismatched patchwork.
The outcome is a durable, functional outdoor space that enhances both the view and the home’s overall value.
The Impact: More Than Just a Deck ๐ก
At the end of the day, this project delivered something more valuable than additional square footage. The homeowners now have a larger, safer outdoor living area designed specifically to hold up against coastal conditions, a space where family and guests can gather, relax, and take in the water views without worrying about the deck beneath their feet.
That’s what G&H Construction builds toward on every project: solutions that are thoughtful, lasting, and genuinely worth the investment.
